Properly Maintaining Your Crowns

By on January 21, 2014

Having your teeth repaired with the help of dental crowns has made your life a whole lot easier. First of all, they look exactly like your real teeth, granting you the confidence that you need in asking your special someone out on a date or impressing potential employers during a job interview. Secondly, they’re quite sturdy, making it possible for you to chew and bite like you usually would. Best of all, they help preserve heavily damaged teeth, so you won’t have to have them pulled out. Therefore, you should do everything that you can to keep your crowns in good physical condition.

To assist you in properly maintaining your crowns, we have listed a number of tips that you may adhere to:

• Practice good oral hygiene every day. Brushing and flossing on a daily basis helps get rid of bacteria and other particles that can harm your crowns.
• Chew your food with extreme caution. Although your crowns are very tough, they can still crack if you exert too much force in chewing your food.
• Don’t consume hot and cold foods or beverages at the same time. Because your crowns are made of porcelain, they tend to expand and contract under hot and cold temperatures respectively. Thus, taking something hot and cold simultaneously can cause your crowns to break.
• Stay away from sticky foods. Sticky foods are capable of pulling your crowns out of your mouth.
• Don’t use your teeth for tasks other than chewing and biting food. Opening potato chip bags or soda bottles with your teeth can damage your crowns.
• Attend all of your scheduled dental appointments. It’s advisable for you not to miss out on any of your scheduled dental appointments since your dentist can do more than just check on your crowns. He can also prescribe ways on how you can take better care of them.

If you need help in ensuring your crowns’ well-being, you may visit Indiana’s top cosmetic dentist, Dr. David Smith, here at Really Smile or call 317-597-8748 to book a consultation.
