How To Care For Your Dental Implants

By on May 5, 2016

Have you recently had dental implants placed? It’s an exciting new time in your life – you’re finally able to enjoy all the foods you’ve been missing, all the smiles you’ve been afraid to show, and caring for your teeth is easier than it has been in years.

We’re thrilled to see the implant results we give the patients at our Carmel office, but placing and restoring implants isn’t the end of the process. Once implants are healed and topped with a bridge or crown there’s some special care that has to be taken to ensure that they stay healthy. While implants aren’t difficult to keep healthy there are still some specifics of caring for them that’s different than a regular tooth.

The Anatomy Of An Implant: How They’re Different

It’s obvious how an implant is physically different from a tooth: it’s a titanium screw that attaches to your jaw that’s capped with a crown or bridge. That said, there are a lot of other differences between implants and teeth that go beyond how they’re built.

One of the biggest differences between a dental implant and a tooth is how they both connect to the sockets they rest in. Teeth don’t make direct contact with your bone, and instead rely on a strong layer of tissue called the periodontal ligament. The ligament is made up of a bunch of thread-like fibers that bind to small pores in your teeth and bone, holding them firmly in place.

The periodontal ligament is also responsible for fighting gum disease and other infections as well. It runs all the way up your tooth to the gumline, and is the reason your gums hold so strongly to your teeth.

Now let’s consider dental implants: they don’t have a periodontal ligament at all. In fact, there’s no tissue between the implant and the bone it rests in. Implants are made of titanium because of its unique ability to fuse to bone. Once your implant is healed it will be perfectly integrated with your bone, forming a seal that’s strong enough to outlast almost anything.

Implants are strong, but the fact that there’s no periodontal ligament surrounding them poses its own problem: it’s much easier for bacteria to make its way beneath your gumline. The gums still hold onto the implant crown or bridge, but with much less strength than the ligament can provide. The result is a risk for a condition known as peri-implant disease.

Peri-Implant Disease: Death For Dental Implants

A healthy implant will easily last you for the rest of your life, but if peri-implant disease strikes that can all change. Similar to gum disease, peri-implant disease happens when oral bacteria gets under your gums, causing inflammation, bleeding, redness, sensitivity, and gum recession.

Since your gums aren’t bonded as firmly to your implant they recede faster, and without any other soft tissue to fight the infection it can quickly attack bone. The end result of peri-implant disease is infection, death of gum tissue, destruction of bone, and loss of implants.

When an implant is lost to peri-implant disease it’s not as simple as placing a new one: the bone that held it is either severely damaged or is gone completely. There are surgical options for regrowing lost bone tissue, but we never want to let things go that far, especially when you consider how easy it is to prevent that kind of damage!

Keeping Your Implants Healthy

As we mentioned above, caring for dental implants is a lot like caring for natural teeth. If your oral hygiene habits are good you probably never even need to worry about developing it!

  • Make sure you’re brushing twice a day with a soft bristled brush. Use a toothpaste that helps fight bacteria and be sure to get all around the gumline of your implant.
  • Floss every night – no exceptions. It only takes oral bacteria about 24 hours to start causing irritation to your gums, and it doesn’t take much longer for it to get below them and start spreading.
  • Make sure you’re seeing us at Really Smile Dentistry for regular checkups. Even if you don’t have a single natural tooth left we still need to take care of your implants!

Your Implants Are An Investment

Having dental implants placed is an investment, both financially and for your personal happiness. Don’t let something simple like a lack of proper care leave you at a loss. Take care of your implants and they’ll take care of you right back.

Five Great Benefits Of Dental Implants

By on November 17, 2015

If you’re suffering from tooth loss you’ve probably wondered what can be done to get your life back to where it used to be. At Really Smile we want to help you return to eating your favorite foods, smiling with ease, and never worrying about a damaged set of teeth. That’s why we recommend dental implants to anyone with missing teeth.

Implants are small titanium screws that act as a replacement for missing tooth roots. They’re placed directly into your jaw and can replace a single missing tooth all the way up to a whole mouthful! You can be enjoying a great new look, feel, and life in practically no time at all!

Dental Implants Act Like Natural Teeth

Unlike other tooth replacement methods that simple bridge a missing tooth or sit on your gums a dental implants is actually attached to your jaw just like a natural tooth. The titanium implant is placed in the exact space a missing tooth used to be and integrates with the bone to form a strong, permanent attachment.

When you eat, drink, talk, and smile with dental implants they behave just like natural teeth! The forces are distributed across your jaws in the same way, they don’t shift and move, and you’ll never have to worry about gum irritation or awkward slipping!

Most patients report that their implants feel no different than natural teeth. Within a few months of placement they are fully healed and you’ll go on living life just like you did before your tooth loss!

Dental Implants Look Perfectly Natural

Some patients get worried that their implants won’t look completely natural. Once they are placed and restored, however, those same patients are pleasantly surprised! We use the most advanced materials available to create dental restorations that look real, feel real, and blend perfectly with your remaining teeth.

For patients without any remaining teeth our implant solutions still look just as good! We use a series of implants to anchor full mouth bridges permanently in place – they look real, act real, and the best part is that they’ll feel completely real to you! No one will even know you have dental implants!

Caring For Dental Implants Is Easy

Are you tired of dealing with the hassle of caring for dentures? We don’t blame you! All those brushes, pastes, solutions, and soaking are nothing but a hassle. Dental implants are the exact opposite in care – you won’t have to worry about them at all!

You care for dental implants just like natural teeth. By brushing twice a day and flossing you’ll be in good shape! You can’t forget the importance of periodic exams and cleanings either – those are still important even if you don’t have any natural teeth left!

Dental Implants Pay For Themselves!

A lot of patients get concerned about the cost of implants but don’t think of them that way – they’re an investment in your future health and happiness! With the improved quality of life, life expectancy, and other benefits you get from implants they’ll pay for themselves over time!

Like any surgical replacement dental implants are an investment. Think of them like a new knee or hip – essential to your happiness and worth the cost!

Implants Stop More Tooth Loss!

If you’re missing one or just a few teeth you might have noticed changes in your bite and smile over time. Lost teeth cause the remaining ones to loosen and shift and there’s only one way to prevent it: a tooth replacement like a dental implant!

If you use an implant to replace a missing tooth you’re not just restoring your smile, you’re also preventing more tooth loss in the future. Do yourself a favor and save all your teeth with a single implant!

We’ll Craft The Perfect Solution!

Dental implants are just one of the ways we practice life changing dentistry. If you have been looking for a way to get back to the same life you lived before tooth loss this is the best way to do it! We can’t wait to explore your options and help you regain the quality of life you used to have!

Don’t wait another day – call Really Smile in Carmel today! You can reach us at 317-597-8748 or you can request an appointment right here online. We look forward to seeing you!

Is Smoking Ruining Your Dental Implants?

By on October 1, 2015

Dental implants are truly a revolution in tooth restoration. If you have one or more implants you’re probably very familiar with how amazing they are! Dental implants are sturdy, last a lifetime, and look so realistic that no one can tell they’re even there! Combine that with how lifelike they function and you’re looking at the ideal solution to tooth loss!

At Really Smile we’re thrilled to be able to offer you premier dental implant treatment. We’re able to offer single tooth restorations all the way up to full mouth replacements. It’s so rewarding to have a patient sit up and really say “wow!” when they realize how amazing the difference is!

Despite how strong dental implants are they aren’t impervious! Your oral health has to be carefully preserved just like your implant was a real tooth or else you could lose it completely! If you’re concerned about the longevity of your dental implants you need to know one of the biggest risk factors: smoking!

What Can Smoking Do To Implants?

To better understand what tobacco smoking can do to dental implants it’s important to know what it can do to your overall oral health. We’re not talking about cancer or other drastic illness but simply the changes in your mouth that are caused by cigarette smoke.

Your mouth contains countless bacteria of all different strains. It exists in the form of plaque, the sticky white film that builds up on your teeth throughout the day. A lot of the bacteria in plaque is harmless but there’s also a lot that isn’t. That bacteria produces acids when it metabolizes the sugar in foods you eat. Those acids are responsible for damage to your teeth in the form of decay and cavities as well as damage to your gums!

Studies of smokers have found an alarming and consistent trend: the harmless bacteria in their mouths dies off and leaves the dangerous stuff to grow and grow! This greatly increases the chance of tooth decay, gum disease, and eventual tooth loss completely!

The Implant Effect

Your dental implants aren’t at risk for damage from plaque bacteria, obviously. What is at risk is your gums and bone! All dental implant wearers are at risk for peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, but smokers have a significantly higher chance of having these conditions!

Peri-implant mucositis is a lot like gingivitis (the early stage of gum disease). At this point there is usually damage to your gums that takes the form of inflammation, sensitivity, easy bleeding, and recession. This happens because harmful bacteria makes its way under the gumline and starts to spread uncontrollably!

Peri-implant mucositis is treated fairly easily and much of the damage it causes can be reversed with the same treatments we use to treat gum disease. Regular, deep cleanings and thorough exams can stop peri-implant mucositis from progressing into peri-implantitis!

Peri-implantitis is where things start to get serious, just like with full-blown gum disease. The bacteria under your gums starts to spread uncontrollably, infecting your gum tissue and attacking the bone that supports your implants. At this stage it can be hard to reverse the damage, which could leave your dental implants at risk for being lost!

As bacteria attacks the bone it causes it to start receding away from the implant. Your implants rely on the bone and gums surrounding it to hold it in place and keep it secure and without it loss is inevitable! If a dental implant is lost due to bone and gum damage it can be nearly impossible to replace it without serious surgery!

Preventing Peri-Implant Diseases

Just like preventing tooth decay and gum disease, the key to preventing peri-implant diseases is good oral health! Smoking cessation, twice a day brushing, flossing in the evenings, and eating right are all keys to preventing bacterial diseases in your mouth.

One last key is, of course, regular professional care. Even with a mouth full of dental implants you still need to see us regularly! We should see you every six months for regular exams and cleanings. If you show signs of peri-implant diseases we might even need to see you more frequently!

Don’t risk your teeth to damage from excess harmful bacteria. Call our Carmel dentist office today at 317-597-8748! You can also schedule an appointment by filling out our online request form. We look forward to seeing you soon!
