Endodontic Therapy Carmel, IN
Endodontic therapy or root canal rescues a tooth that is severely damaged. Instead of pulling out the tooth, your Carmel dentist removes decayed areas and bacteria, seals the space, and restores the structure with a dental crown.
The Dental Pulp
Endodontics is concerned with the dental pulp or the bundle of living tissue in the center of each tooth. Normally, the pulp is protected by the dentin and the tough enamel layer. However, poor oral hygiene, trauma or disease can create an opening deep enough for bacteria to penetrate and infect the pulp.
Endodontic therapy is necessary to eliminate pain and prevent infection from spreading to adjacent teeth. If you experience severe pain, swelling, persistent tooth sensitivity and chronic bad breath, see Dr. Smith right away. You may need a root canal.
What to Expect at the Clinic
During consultation, Dr. Smith will examine your mouth and test the tooth for pressure and temperature sensitivity. Diagnostic X-rays are often required to confirm the infection. If the pulp is healthy but decay is present, the tooth may be restored with a tooth-colored filling. If the pulp is dead or infected, Dr. Smith will perform a root canal. He will prepare your mouth, isolate the tooth, and numb the area with local anesthetic. If you are very anxious or fearful, NuCalm Relaxation Dentistry is recommended.
Once you are ready for treatment, Dr. Smith will make an opening in the tooth to remove bacteria and the diseased pulp. The space and tiny root canals are cleaned thoroughly with laser or special instruments. Finally, the space is filled with rubbery material that prevents re-infection. A dental crown is often needed to strengthen the weak structure and protect the tooth.
