Sleep Apnea Epworth Test

By on November 6, 2013

Carmel, IN dentist Dr. Smith trained at the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dentistry (LVI) to give patients a comprehensive approach to sleep apnea management. Dr. Smith understands that sleep apnea and head and neck pain are related, and that it’s often necessary to treat both.

People with sleep apnea stop breathing while asleep, sometimes hundreds of times each night. When the level of oxygen in the blood drops too low, the body awakens the sleeper. Many patients report gasping for air or choking as they are awakened. Because of these sleep interruptions, patients usually experience tiredness during the day, irritability and difficulty focusing on tasks.

How Sleepy are You?

Sleep apnea management in Carmel, IN starts with a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis. To study episodes of breathing pauses during sleep, the doctor requests a sleep study (polysomnogram) in the clinic or at home.

Also part of the diagnostic exam is the Sleep Apnea Epworth Test or Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Dr. Smith uses this quick questionnaire to determine how sleepy you are during the day and how sleep affects your daily life. The score ranges from 0 to 24, with 10 being normal. Take the test below to find out how sleepy you are:

How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to feeling just tired? This refers to your usual way of life in recent times. Even if you have not done some of these things recently try to work out how they would have affected you.

Use the following scale to choose the most appropriate number for each situation:

0 = no chance of dozing
1 = slight chance of dozing
2 = moderate chance of dozing
3 = high chance of dozing

Situation Chance of Dozing or Sleeping
Sitting and reading ____
Watching TV ____
Sitting inactive in a public place ____
Being a passenger in a motor vehicle for an hour or more ____
Lying down in the afternoon ____
Sitting and talking to someone ____
Sitting quietly after lunch (no alcohol) ____
Stopped for a few minutes in traffic while driving ____
Total score: ____

If you experience symptoms of sleep apnea, contact your sleep specialist in Carmel, IN. Call 877-800-2160 or click here to make an appointment.

I’m Afraid of the Doctor

TMJ

Competent care in absolute comfort from your Carmel, IN Dentist

Do you need dental care but are afraid of the dentist? Get treated in complete comfort at our guilt-free Indiana dental clinic. Patient comfort is the number one goal of our Really Smile team. That’s why we invest in the latest equipment and facilities. We also offer sedation dentistry for patients with dental anxiety.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or inhalation sedation is recommended for patients with mild anxiety. Nitrous oxide helps you relax during the procedure, and the sedative effects wear off quickly so you can resume normal activities.

Oral sedation

Sedatives administered orally produce mild to moderate levels of sedation. You are conscious during the procedure, but you may nod off. If you do fall asleep, you can be easily awakened by Dr. Smith. Patients react differently to oral sedatives, and the effects may last longer for some people.

IV sedation

Compared to oral sedation, the effects of IV sedation are easier to control and predict. IV sedatives take effect immediately after injection into a vein. Most patients are conscious during the procedure, but some may feel sleepy. Dr. Smith can easily awaken you and adjust the dosage if necessary.

Spa Scent

A dental clinic doesn’t have to smell like one. Our Really Smile clinic uses spa scents to promote ultimate relaxation. Feel comfortable and at ease from the moment you step into our office.

Tensing Room

Our tensing room helps you reach your desired level of comfort. The room is set up just like an aromatherapy or massage room at a spa. There is soft lighting, relaxing spa scents and gentle music. Patients who spend some time in the tensing room are more comfortable and at ease during their procedure.

It’s time to stop hiding your smile behind your hand—Really Smile Dental offers procedures that will change your life. Dr. David A. Dr. Smith will first conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your mouth before recommending a procedure. We want you to make informed decisions about your oral health, so we make sure to discuss all available options.

Look Younger

Cosmetic dental procedures are not just for aesthetics. We want to give you beautiful smiles that are also healthy and long-lasting. KOR whitening is a deep bleaching procedure that creates dramatic results in one appointment—perfect for that special event. For severe damage and discoloration that does not respond to standard teeth whitening, we offer high-quality porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns.

Sleep Better

Do you get enough sleep but still feel exhausted during the day? It may be more than just insomnia. Lack of sleep accompanied by snoring and breathing pauses can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a sleep disorder caused by blockage in the upper airway. Carmel, IN dentist, Dr. Smith provides comprehensive sleep apnea management and airway care.

Improve your life with truly comfortable dentistry at Really Smile Dental. Whether it’s tooth decay or a lost tooth, we have the tools and expertise to help you smile again—painlessly. If you are anxious about dental procedures, don’t forget to ask about sedation dentistry.

I’m Having a Hard Time Eating

By on November 6, 2013

Eat the food you love and enjoy life again with beautiful, permanent teeth from your Carmel, IN dentist.

Discomfort and chewing problems can be caused by bad teeth or ill-fitting dentures. Removable dentures can hurt your gums and come off at the most inconvenient moments. Tooth decay can cause excruciating pain if the dental pulp becomes infected.

It’s easy to lose your appetite because you are limited to eating soft, mushy foods. What’s life if you can’t eat the food that you love? Dr. David A. Smith of Really Smile Dental wants you to enjoy life again, so he offers solutions like restorations and dental implants.

Restorations

Bad teeth caused by neglect, accident or disease can make eating difficult. Let your Carmel, IN dentist bring back your smile with restorations like composite fillings, root canals, and crowns.

Composite fillings are made of tooth-colored resin that can be perfectly color-matched to your existing teeth. The result is superior aesthetics and high-quality restorations that last a long time.

Root canals get rid of the infected pulp in the center of the tooth. Your Indiana dentist will remove all decayed areas, clean the root canal and finally seal off the space with filling material. The tooth may be capped with a crown if damage is extensive.

Crowns are tooth-colored caps that cover the entire portion of a tooth above the gum line. Crowns are usually recommended for severely-damaged teeth or teeth that are too weak for fillings, inlays and onlays.  Today’s crowns are very different from the crowns of the past, and are made of an all ceramic material, that results in a beautiful, natural looking tooth rather than the metal grayness that the older crowns looked like.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are small posts usually made of titanium or other biocompatible materials. Implants replace the tooth roots and provide a strong foundation for prosthetic teeth. Unlike dentures, dental implants look and feel natural and prevent bone deterioration in the jaw.
