We are here to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy for a
lifetime. Dental cleanings are necessary to remove the
plaque and tartar that build up on your teeth. People
with healthy gums need to have their teeth cleaned every
6 months. People with unhealthy gums, or
periodontal disease, need their
teeth cleaned every 3 - 4 months to keep their gums
healthy.
Dental plaque is made up of tiny bacteria
that grow on your teeth. As the plaque sits on the teeth,
it is flooded with calcium and mineral-rich saliva; it
then calcifies, or becomes hardened. This hardened plaque
is what we call calculus, or dental tartar. Once the
tartar is hardened it can only be removed by a dental
cleaning. No matter how well you brush or floss you can't
get all the plaque off, so eventually small amounts of
tartar will form; that is why you need to have your teeth
cleaned.
